Pigs, Coos and Bearded Dragons, oh My!

Dr. Natalie’s Most Unusual Patients of 2024

As a certified animal chiropractor, I’ve had the privilege of treating an incredible variety of animals, from the noble horse to the playful pup. However, 2024 brought some truly unique patients to my practice, each with their own quirks and challenges. Here are three of my most unusual cases this year, ranked in ascending order of peculiarity.

Third Place :The KuneKune Pig

First up on the list is the KuneKune pig, a breed celebrated for its friendly nature and the high-quality lard it produces—a coveted ingredient in creating flaky pastries. This particular KuneKune, named Buttercup, came in with stiffness in her hindquarters. Adjusting a pig isn’t all that different from other animals in terms of anatomy, but their round, barrel-like bodies pose a unique challenge. Buttercup’s response to the adjustments was almost immediate; her mobility improved, and her owners reported she was back to trotting around her pen with newfound ease. Don't worry, this KuneKune is a beloved pet and will not be contributing to pastry deliciousness.

Second Place: The Highland Coo

Next on the list is the Highland Coo (or cow), a breed beloved for its long, shaggy coat and irresistibly endearing appearance. My patient, a young coo named Fergus, had been experiencing discomfort in his lower back, likely due to his playful antics in the pasture. Adjusting Fergus required careful navigation of his thick fur and substantial frame, but he remained remarkably calm throughout the process. After his adjustment, Fergus treated us to a happy “coo” of gratitude, and his owners noted a significant improvement in his gait and overall energy.  The best part about being a Coo doctor is that this Coo breeder is in expansion mode.  They are gong to grow their herd to at least 50 cows.  since so many of. you asked how you can meet a Coo, I am trying to talk them into tours!

First Place: The Bearded Dragon

Taking the top spot for the most unusual patient of 2024 is none other than a Bearded Dragon named Bilbo Dragons!. Bearded Dragons are fascinating creatures, not least because their anatomy differs significantly from that of mammals and even other reptiles. Unlike animals with a sacrum, Bilbo Dragons' spine consists of a continuous chain of vertebrae running from his neck to the tip of his tail. Adjusting Bilbo Dragons required a delicate touch and a deep understanding of his unique skeletal structure. His owner sought my help because Bilbo Dragons had been sluggish and showed signs of discomfort during movement. After a gentle adjustment, Bilbo Dragons became more active, basking and exploring his terrarium with renewed vigour, well that may an exaggeration, he is a reptile after all. Yes, I washed my hands very well after adjusting Bilbo as his skin would be covered with Salmonella.

A Year of Growth and Gratitude

Each of these animals taught me something new, reinforcing the incredible diversity of the animal kingdom and the importance of tailored care. Treating such a wide range of species not only challenges me to adapt my techniques but also fills me with immense gratitude for the trust their owners place in my hands.

Whether it’s a pastry-perfect pig, a lovable coo, or a spine-stretching dragon, every patient—no matter how unusual—is a reminder of why I love what I do. Here’s to more unique patients and learning opportunities in the years to come!
